Though I did sometimes wonder why everyone in the future would have English names. I do realize that makes me a very strange little Portuguese girl, (wink, nudge) but I really didn’t need a Portuguese female character to be interested. What I cared about was that the characters be interesting, and the setting plausible and vivid. Just as I couldn’t care less if I read books that contained only male characters (Look, mostly not even science fiction, but dad’s World War I and II historical fiction library.) (And heck, I grew up in Portugal.) However, there is to the vast SF geekdom this: that we forget everything in the presence of really compelling ideas, and I have always had a way of making men forget what I looked like, when I started talking.Īnyway, up till then, I really didn’t have a mental image of what the authors looked like, and I couldn’t care less. But I doubt very much that it would have gone beyond that, without encouragement. Oh, I’m not saying there wouldn’t have been flirting, some of it likely inappropriate. Argued with me, to the last ditch, sure, but like my husband on the day they met and, for reasons known only to the psychiatrists we don’t have, fell into a heated discussion of parallel worlds from philosophical and mathematical perspectives, they’d be enthusiastic and happy to trade opinions. And I know too that they wouldn’t have sent my 17 year old self away. Now that I’m well, old and one of the group - because the group of science fiction authors extends through space and time, and we don’t make much nevermind about vital status - I look at pictures of worldcons before I was born, and I can imagine myself walking into the hospitality suite, grabbing some stale peanuts and sitting on the floor, where the greats are talking, just to listen. But did they all (I found other pictures later) need to look old and nerdish, and like they’d dismiss me with a “Little girl, we’re talking about important stuff here?” Couldn’t one of them at least be ravishingly handsome, rugged and about thirty if that? Look, I knew my favorite authors were my dad’s age or older. (I think I’ve made mention here, but maybe not, of how Portuguese did book covers: generic images, no author picture.) I borrowed a Clifford Simak hardback from the library, turned the picture over, and…. The first time I saw a picture of one of my favorite authors, I was seventeen and an exchange student in the US.

Because the less you are thinking about your workflow, the more it is doing for you. And more than 50 functions have been added as user-defined key commands. Some import and snapping methods have been improved, only one copy of each plug-in is shown by default. Browser search results are now ordered by relevance, and plug-ins are scanned faster. A few framework elements have been improved as well.Whether you are creating small variations or taking a performance to exotic new places, this device puts the whole musical journey within arm’s reach. And with the new Note FX Selector device, you can sweep through endless layers with one simple knob. Bitwig Studio’s various note FXs allow you to expand your music by arpeggiating, harmonizing, delaying, echoing, and more.Spend less time on edits and more on music. Or select multiple clips and slide them all by the same amount. Dropped in a file that doesn’t start on the downbeat? Slide it immediately without leaving the Arranger. This keeps the clip in place while you freely move the audio within it. One new feature here is the ability to slide audio. So with version 2.5, audio editing has been streamlined while preserving the advanced options. This uniquely powerful technique is a user favorite, but they have (unsurprisingly) asked for more. From the start, an audio clip in Bitwig Studio could contain any number of audio events.Treat these blocks as sections, and now your clips can automatically navigate your arrangement. By leaving a blank slot between a group of clips, you have now defined separate clip blocks that Bitwig Studio’s Next Action feature can jump between. And with the added concept of clip blocks, new arrangement possibilities are now available. Whether building an arrangement or crafting a performance, clip launching is essential to any modern DAW. While not a professional grade scanner by any means, if operated as a standalone device, either 14MP or interpolated 22MP files can be saved directly to SD card, though we’ll need to provide our own card for that to happen. Thus equipped, the jack-of-all-trades device lets us view, edit and scan film slides and negatives, converting them into handy-to-share JPEG digital files, thanks to built-in 14 megapixel sensor. Here’s a slightly more high tech alternative to also bear the familiar yellow and black Kodak branding that, rather than a magnifier, instead features its own built-in 5-inch LCD screen. Without further ado then, lets slide our recommendations for the best slide viewers you can currently buy under your nose… While many of the viewers showcased here offer the opportunity to use batteries for the ultimate in portability, as well as mains power, for most either the mains adapter and/or the batteries required are optional extras, so we’ve indicated where that is the case. After all, if we’ve gone to the trouble of digging out our old slides, it stands to reason that we might want digital copies of them going forward too. Here we’re showcasing a selection of the best and relatively inexpensive slide viewers currently on the market, which might also, on occasion, happen to double as a scanner of sorts. Nowadays, of course, some very basic level ‘scanning’ can be achieved with simply a lightbox and a smartphone. Enter the battery-operated handheld slide viewer with viewing alternatives also including mains-powered light-boxes, handheld loupes (opens in new tab) that utilize ambient light, and if we want to digitize said slides, then of course the film scanner (opens in new tab) too. |
